An ebook's Look sets how its chapter openings, scene breaks and title page are styled; the text and its order stay the same, and readers still choose their own font, size and spacing. Choose it in the ebook's Settings, then build the ebook again and open the Preview to see it as each reading app shows it.
- Classic: centred chapter headings and a title page in spaced capitals.
- Modern: chapter openings flush left in a sans-serif under a thin rule.
- Elegant: chapter titles in italics, a drop cap at each chapter's first paragraph, more air around scene breaks. A reading app without drop caps shows the first letter as it is.
Vertical Japanese ebooks keep their own look. A printed book's type is chosen in its own settings.
Scene breaks: each format's Settings also say how the breaks between scenes show: as your manuscript writes them, as \* \* \* or • • •, as a blank line, or as your book's emblem (once it's uploaded under Artwork and emblem). Printed books can also take ⁂ or ❦; ebooks leave those out, as many reading apps' fonts don't have them and would show an empty box.
