Review copies

Send advance readers a private link to your ebook: they read it in the browser or download it with their name inside, and you see who opened it.

Once an edition's ebook is built and passes its checks, Review copies beside its download on the book's page opens the edition's list of copies. Add your readers, one per line: a name, and an email if you like to keep it with the name (for example `Ada Brennan, ada@example.com`). Each reader gets a private link of their own.

The links are shown once, right after you make them: copy them all, or save them as a list, and send each reader theirs yourself. The studio never writes to your readers, and keeps only a scrambled form of each link, so a lost link can't be shown again. Make a new link for that reader instead: the old one stops working.

A reader's link opens a page with the book's cover and your note to them. From there they read it in the browser, the way the preview shows it, or download the EPUB (unless you chose reading in the browser only) for Kindle (Send to Kindle takes EPUB files), Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books or any reading app. Both open on a page with the reader's name, in the edition's language, that asks them to keep the copy to themselves and, if they review the book, to say they got a free copy. The EPUB also carries their name in its rights line and an identifier of its own, so a copy that turns up somewhere says whose it was.

Readers get the edition's newest ebook that passed its checks: build the ebook again and they get the new version the next time they open their link or download it.

The list shows when each reader first and last opened their copy and how many times they downloaded it. A link works for the days you chose (60 unless you change it); give it more time, stop it (the copy stays listed with what its reader did), or remove the copy, which also removes the reader's name and email.

A name in the book makes sharing it less likely, not impossible: send copies to readers you trust. Reading in the browser only keeps the EPUB file from them, but anyone can still copy the text off a page they're reading. Amazon lets readers review a free advance copy of a book, but a review can't be the price of the copy, and you can't ask for a good one.
