KDP royalty calculator for paperbacks, hardcovers and ebooks in 17 Amazon marketplaces

Pick the format, the marketplace and your list price, and see what KDP pays you per sale, with the printing cost, the lowest price KDP accepts and the royalty plan that applies.

How it works

Print books earn 60% of the list price once it reaches the marketplace's threshold ($9.99 on Amazon.com, €9.99 in the euro stores, £7.99 on Amazon.co.uk), and 50% below it. KDP then takes the printing cost, which depends on the binding, the page count and the trim.

Kindle ebooks earn 70% inside each marketplace's price band ($2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com) and 35% outside it. On the 70% plan KDP first takes a delivery cost for the file's size ($0.15 per MB on Amazon.com), and the ebook must sell at least 20% below the print edition.

In Japan, India, Brazil and Mexico the 70% plan needs the ebook in KDP Select. Where the list price includes tax, as in Europe and Japan, KDP takes the tax out before working out the royalty.

Rules change: this calculator says when its figures were checked, and links to KDP's own pages.

A worked example

A 300-page, 6 × 9 in paperback at $14.99 on Amazon.com is above the $9.99 threshold, so it earns 60%: $8.99. Printing costs $4.60, which leaves a royalty of $4.39 a copy. The lowest price KDP accepts for it is $9.20.

A 2 MB Kindle ebook at $4.99 on Amazon.com is inside the 70% band. The delivery cost is 2 × $0.15 = $0.30, so the royalty is 70% of $4.69: $3.28 a copy.

Questions authors ask

Why is my paperback royalty lower below $9.99?
Since June 2025 KDP pays 50% instead of 60% on print books priced under its threshold, before the printing cost comes off. A small price rise can earn much more per copy.
What does Expanded Distribution pay?
40% of the list price, less the printing cost, for copies sold through bookshops and libraries rather than Amazon.
Is the 70% ebook royalty available everywhere?
In most marketplaces, inside the price band. In Japan, India, Brazil and Mexico the ebook must also be enrolled in KDP Select.
Does the file size matter for ebooks?
On the 70% plan, yes: the delivery cost grows with every megabyte. Compress large images, or a picture-heavy ebook can lose a noticeable share of its royalty.
Are these the exact figures KDP will show?
They follow KDP's published rules on the date shown. KDP's own calculator, linked on the page, has the final word.
