The writing assistant is in the editor, beside the chapter you're writing, and does nothing until you ask. Each run reads the chapter as you have it now and is paid from your Studio credit: $0.10 for every 1,000 words of the chapter, the same as proofreading, and at least $0.05 a run, shown before it runs.
- Critique. A developmental editor's notes on the chapter: pacing, clarity, dialogue, character, point of view, style. Each points at the words it's about, and it says what already works.
- Continuity. What in the chapter contradicts your story bible (the entries the chapter names, with their details and notes) or contradicts itself: eye colours, ages, places, what happened when.
- Line edits. Suggestions for clearer, tighter lines in your voice. Accept or reject each one; an accepted edit goes into the chapter like one you typed, so Undo takes it back, and nothing else changes.
Every run and every edit you accept is kept in your account's log. In KDP's terms, text you wrote and then edited with an AI's suggestions is AI-assisted, which KDP doesn't ask you to declare; other stores ask in their own words, and the edition's AI use tab has their questions.
