KDP prints Polish paperbacks and hardcovers but doesn't sell Polish ebooks, so a Polish ebook sells through the Polish stores and the international ones. This is where, what each pays and the rules in Poland, from the stores' and the government's own pages.
Selling ebooks in Polish
| Store | How you reach it | What you earn |
|---|---|---|
| Empik Selfpublishing | Sign up yourself. | 50% of your suggested net price for each ebook sold. Empik Go, its subscription, pays from a pool of 50% of its net subscription income, shared by reading time. Paid when you ask, within 20 days after a quarter ends, at most twice a year and from 300 zł. |
| Legimi | Sign up yourself. | 70% of the price you set for each ebook sold. Legimi doesn't publish what its subscription pays per read. |
| Virtualo | Through Empik Selfpublishing, which sells its authors' ebooks on Virtualo too; to leave Virtualo out, Empik's page about it says to write to Empik. We found no sign-up of Virtualo's own for self-publishers. | Through Empik Selfpublishing: 50% of your suggested net price for each ebook sold there. |
| Woblink | No sign-up for self-publishers that we could find; some reach it through a distributor. | What the distributor that reaches it passes on. |
| Apple Books | Sign up yourself. | 70% of the list price, whatever the price, paid within 45 days of the month's end. |
| Kobo Writing Life | Sign up yourself. | 70% of the list price from US$2.99, CA$2.99, £1.99, €1.99 or ¥299 up; 45% below. Kobo Plus pays 60% of the value of the minutes read. |
| Google Play Books | Sign up yourself. | 70% of the list price in more than 60 countries once you accept Google's updated terms (52% before); some Asian markets keep their current split. |
| Barnes & Noble Press | Sign up yourself. B&N Press doesn't publish a list of the languages it takes: check with it before you upload. | Ebooks: 70% of the list price. Print: 55% of the list price, less the printing cost. Paid in US dollars. |
| Draft2Digital | A distributor: one upload reaches many stores. | About 60% of the list price at Apple, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and Tolino (D2D keeps about 10%); at Amazon 60% from $2.99 to $9.99, else 30%. Print pays about 45% of the list price, less printing. |
| PublishDrive | A distributor: one upload reaches many stores. | The stores' full royalty: PublishDrive charges a monthly plan instead of a cut (one ebook free; plans from $16.99 a month, or $13.99 billed yearly). Paid two to three months after each sale. |
| IngramSpark | A distributor: one upload reaches many stores. | Ebooks: 85% of what the store pays IngramSpark. Print: the list price, less your wholesale discount and the print cost; books in distribution are also charged a 1.875% market access fee. Paid about 90 days after the month of sale. |
The Polish stores you can join yourself
Empik Selfpublishing
- Empik's terms ask for tax residence in Poland. You can sign up as a private person, a sole trader or a company; without a business, Empik deducts the tax advances for you. Payouts need your PESEL, tax office and bank account (and NIP for a business).
- Books go to empik.com, Empik Go and Virtualo. The licence isn't exclusive, but you can't leave Empik Go out.
Legimi
- Writers without a business can open a Self-publisher account and sign Legimi's contract online.
- Legimi's form sits behind its sign-in, so the fields above follow its terms rather than its form: check them as you go.
The rules in Poland
- VAT: ebooks, audiobooks included, have been taxed at 5% since 1 November 2019, down from 23%. Empik pays its share of the net price you suggest, before tax.
- Prices: No fixed price law yet. The Ministry of Culture's draft would fix the price of a new book for 12 months from its release, ebooks and audiobooks included. On 21 September 2026 the ministry asked for it to be added to the government's list of planned laws; public consultation starts once the Government Legislation Centre publishes the text. The guide to the draft follows it.
- ISBNs: e-isbn.pl, the National Library of Poland, gives them. Free for publishers based in Poland. Numbers come in a pool for your publisher name. The ISBN guide for Poland has the form, field by field.
Print on Amazon.pl
Books in Polish are usually listed first on Amazon.pl, which sells in złoty. KDP pays 60% of a print book's list price there, less printing, from 40 zł, and 50% below it. The guide to KDP on Amazon.pl works out the printing cost.
In PenStranding
PenStranding sets Polish ebooks and print with Polish typography: a no-break space after the one-letter words a, i, o, u, w and z so none ends a line, dialogue dashes kept with their words, and ellipses as one sign. It makes the Empik and Legimi kits from your edition, writes the copyright page in Polish, and walks you through e-isbn.pl's form.
Make your Polish edition, and every store's kit for it.
