Fixed book prices in Mexico: what self-publishers need to know

Mexico's fixed book price law covers printed books and ebooks. Here is what it asks of you as the publisher, and what KDP asks.

The facts

The rule
Whoever publishes or imports a book in Mexico sets its retail price freely and registers it, with the ISBN and the printing or import date, in the Ministry of Culture's public database before it goes on sale. Sellers then charge exactly that price for 36 months from the printing or reprint date in the colophon; the state, libraries and schools buying for their own use are exempt. Ebooks count as books: while the printed edition has its single price, the ebook is held to the same rules.

What KDP asks
Where a fixed book price law applies, KDP asks you to set the same list price at every retailer, and to tell the authorities where the law requires it.
